Cross fold brochures

This product is very common when it comes to printing newspaper-like publications, in which the information we want to convey can be placed on a single sheet. This is the case of a DIN A2 "landscape" sheet, DIN A4 "landscape" once cross-folded. Cross fold brochures are also very popular to promote products on offer at home appliance stores, grocery stores ...

Cross fold leaflet printing

Cross folds are an original offering at the time of printing advertising brochures .

What is a cross fold? Basically, there are two fold lines, but each of them on a different axis: one folded in the horizontal axis and the other folded in the vertical axis. Let's suppose that we have a DIN A2 format (42 x 59.4 cm) leaflet. Let's imagine that we fold it in the horizontal axis, so it becomes a DIN A3 (42 x 29.7 cm). Next, we fold it again in the vertical axis, becoming a DIN A4 (21 x 29.7 cm) leaflet.

Information on cross fold formats

Since cross-folding consists of two bifold foldings, one on the horizontal axis and one on the vertical axis, with respect to the open format the closed format is always half the size, in both dimensions.

For instance: finished size for a 40x56 cm open format cross fold will be 20x28 cm. An open format 29.7x42 cm (DIN A3) cross fold will measure, finished size, 14.8x21 cm (DIN A5).

Technical considerations about cross fold leaflet design

When designing a cross fold, it is necessary to define in your design software a 2-page document , the size of the brochure flat open.

Usually all 4 panels have to be the same size. But there may also be the case of asymmetric cross folded leaflets, with two panels being narrower than the other two.

A 3 mm bleed area must be defined and the elements that must bleed off should also extend 3 mm beyond the page edges. It is advisable to respect a safety margin of 3 to 5 mm around the 4 page edges, in which no element should be placed (other than those that extend out of the page). It is essential to respect this rule; otherwise, when trimming the cross fold brochure, elements placed very close to the paper edge may be partially or totally sliced.

As for resolution of pictures and logos. image resolution must be high enough as to guarantee quality reproduction.
