Technical aspects of designing loose leaf sets
When printing loose leaf documents, the main design caution is to respect a safety margin of 15 mm on the side where the file holes will be punched.
On the front side this margin must be kept on the left edge while on the back side, it must be kept on the right edge. It is advisable not to place there useful information such as texts or logos, since it could be punched.
A bleeding area of 3 mm must be defined in the layout document, and all the elements that have to bleed off should extend 3 mm. out of the page edges.
When designing loose sheet sets, it is essential not to place elements too close to the page edges as long as these elements do not bleed, as they could be trimmed. It is advisable to keep a safety margin of 3 to 5 mm. around the page border where no useful content should be placed, especially page numbers.
When designing loose leaf sets, attention must be paid to image and logo resolution , in order to ensure a high quality reproduction. Since Printing loose sheets is the same as printing catalogues (the only difference being the binding), good quality of all elements is essential.
