Softocover book printing

We have extensive experience printing softcover books. Softcovers are called this as opposed to "hardcovers". This means that the covers, even if they are heavyweight paper, are not rigid (as in a hardcover), but have some flexibility.

Types of Bookbinding

We can choose among different types of binding for books.

  • Section-sewn binding consists of the sheets being sewn together and then glued to the cover. It is considered to be the most consistent and highest quality binding, as the book can be opened without fear of the sheets coming off.
  • Perfect binding offers a lower level of quality compared to section-sewn binding, as the sheets are just glued together and then glued to the cover. If the book is left flat open, there is a risk that the sheets will come off. Perfect binding is cheaper than section-sewn binding.
  • PUR binding combines the advantages of the two previous types: book quality and consistency, on the one hand, and production economy, on the other. On a technical level, it is comparable to perfect binding, but it uses a much stronger glue that confers great consistency to the book.

Which binding should I choose for printing my softcover books?

In our online shop you can choose between section-sewn softcover and PUR softcover.

We have discarded perfect binding because it' s an obsolete solution, since the quality level is clearly surpassed by PUR binding.

It is true that section-sewn binding is the most prestigious because of its quality, but modern technology allows to get PUR-bound books of a quality similar to that of section sewn books. On a practical level, the quality resulting from PUR binding is as good as that of sewn binding... and its cost is significantly lower.

Let's be practical. After more than 7 years of economic crisis, the pockets of average people have been more or less affected, and public administration budgets have been severely downsized. In this context, virtually all sectors have had to make efforts to, on the one hand, reduce prices and, on the other hand, to offer new products and services with a more practical and economic approach. We have had to manage to adapt to the new situation.

We can find a very clear example in the automotive sector. Today we can buy low- and mid-range vehicles at the same prices as ten years ago (or even cheaper), better equipped and with more advanced technologies. SUVs (4x4) have also evolved: a new segment of compact SUVs has appeared, smaller and cheaper than medium and large SUVs, and they are experiencing good sales performance. The predominant trend is simplification and cost reduction .

The spine: a peculiar element of softcover books

The main defining element of a softcover book is that it has a spine.

The spine is where the cover gets bound to the text block. Unlike saddle-stitched binding, the signatures that make up a softcover book are "consecutive", that is, one after another, allowing a high number of pages. Therefore, in softcover books the size of the spine is determined by the paper thickness and the total number of pages in the book. This characteristic allows, when designing the covers, to layout on the spine some elements such as the title of the book, the author and the publisher.

Flaps: extra distinction for your softcover books

In our online shop we provide you with the possibility to choose covers with 1 or 2 flaps.

What are flaps? They are extensions of the covers which may be placed after the cover and/or after the back cover, folding inwards once the book has been bound. Imagine that you have in your hands a book with flaps; if you tear out the covers and unfold them, you will see clearly the following sequence (looking at the outer side and looking from left to right): on the left you have the back cover flap; then you find the back cover; then the spine; then the cover; and finally, the cover flap.

What is the purpose of flaps? To add information of interest. These are some elements usually laid out on flaps: a picture and a brief review about the author of the book; the titles of other books by the same author or publisher; a summary of the book's content... It is evident that the presence of the flaps provides a plus of distinction to softcover books. A book with flaps has more personality and conveys a greater sense of quality.

Cautions when Designing Softcover Books

Each side has to be a page of your print file

In other words, the page size in our desktop publishing application must be the sum of back cover, spine and cover. For example, if the closed format of our book measures 16 x 23 cm, consists of 96 inner pages and the covers are printed 4/ 4 (full colour, 2 sides), we will create a file consisting of 2 pages size 32.5 x 23 cm. (16 cm. back cover + 0,5 cm. spine + 16 cm. cover). Spine size, in this example, is arbitrary. The exact calculation of the spine is carried out by us in our Prepress section, from a dummy book made of the real paper to be printed.

You may contact our customer service and we will inform you about the measure of the spine for your book.

If the book has flaps, add 2 mm to the size of the cover and back cover.

Following the previous example, let's suppose that the covers have 2 flaps of 8 cm each and that the printing is 4/0 (full colour, 1 side). In this case, we will design a file consisting of 1 page of 48.9 x 23 cm size (8 cm. flap + 16.2 cm. back cover + 0.5 cm. spine + 16.2 cm. cover + 8 cm. flap).

When designing interiors, we must bear in mind that the number of pages must be a multiple of 4. It is also advisable to choose "facing pages" when creating your new document, since the pages are displayed as in a book (even or left page and odd or right page). This facilitates the layout of the book.

If our design has elements that bleed off, it is necessary to define a bleed area of 3 mm. and those elements must be extended 3 mm beyond the page limit.

And those elements that do not bleed off should not be brought too close to the page limit, because they could be accidentally trimmed during the binding process. It is advisable to keep a safety margin of 5 mm blank around the page, on all sides.

The main quality of a good book is its legibility. In order to achieve it, it is necessary to respect two basic aspects: to use a legible enough typeface and font size; to lay out large margins, especially the inner ones (those next to the spine). When we are reading a book, the very thickness of the spine prevents us from opening it completely, which is not the case with saddle-stitched or wire-o products. That's why the inside margins have to be generous enough for the texts to be easily read.

When it comes to printing softcover books, we're just as practical. Why pay more if you can save money and get the same quality with a great technical solution (PUR binding)? The decision is up to you.
